Floral Design on a Budget
On a tight budget? No worries! This lovely arrangement was crafted for less than the cost of a pizza, including the vase, and all sourced from the grocery store. Here’s how you can do it too:
1 mason jar
1 filler flower(s) (for mass)
2-3 line flowers (for height)
2-3 focal flowers (for attention)
2-3 accent pieces (for texture)
Have fun!!!!
Step One – The Vessel
Begin with a quart-sized jar—Mason jars are ideal, and you likely have one stashed in your kitchen. If not, you can repurpose a pasta sauce jar or grab one from the grocery store in the canning or baking aisle.
For a vintage vibe, spray paint the inside of the jar. This clever trick gives the illusion that the glass is colored.
*If you don’t have any paint on hand, feel free to skip this step!
I love the Seaside Gloss paint from Home Depot—it gives the jar a gorgeous old-school milk glass look.
Once the paint is dry, it’s time to start arranging!
If you prefer a flawless finish, let it dry completely overnight. This particular jar wasn’t fully dry, as you can see a few nicks from the flower stems at the bottom.
Step Two – Filler Flower
Next, add your filler flower. These are blooms or greens that fill out the vase. You can use greens or fluffy florals.
For this arrangement, I used a single large hydrangea for a full, soft look.
Step Three – Line Flowers
Next, add your line flowers toward the back of the arrangement. Line flowers are tall and linear. They set the height of the arrangement.
Here I used two pieces of dark purple stock.
Step Four – Focal Flowers
Focal flowers are typically large and round. They are the largest flowers of the arrangement, and grab your attention.
I chose two lavender roses as my focal blooms.
Step Four – The Accents
Accent pieces add texture and interest.
Items from the produce section work wonders here. I added two purple kale leaves to tie the colors together and tucked in a few sprigs of Italian parsley to bring movement and that “gathered from the garden” feel.
Step Five – Enjoy!
Place your masterpiece for all to enjoy.
You may even get a few curious compliments like, “Where did you get that old milk glass jar?” and “Is that kale?”
